There are several types of bands you could be in. The standard band most people join in high school could go by several different names, such as concert band, symphonic band, or wind ensemble. This is the main band, and there's often multiple levels for different skill levels. These bands play a variety of songs, but they're usually written specifically for high school bands. Your high school might also have a jazz band! Jazz bands are fun, and tend to be a bit more layed back than other bands. Jazz music is exciting to play, and improvised soloing gives you plenty to expand on. There are also percussion ensembles or drumline. Both of these primarily use percussion instruments. The main difference between percussion ensemble and drumline is that while percussion ensemble plays varied pieces similar to ones played by standard high school bands, drumline bands play more marches.
